You can search the website by category, agency or overall grant available to people and businesses. The site can still be difficult to maneuver, but if you pay attention, you will find a lot of government funded grants.
Be aware that grants.gov is not a complete listing of the grant programs that are out there for businesses and individuals. There are two other government websites that list government funded grants:

You can also do a Google or Yahoo keyword search for ‘government funded grants’ or ‘grants for single mothers.” Do your searches within quotations for the best results available day to day.
You can also sign up with an agency that maintains private government grant opportunities. Although it costs money, it may be worth it for you to have all of the available government funded grants in one place, saving you a lot of time.
After you locate the grants that you want to apply for, it is recommended to contact the organization funding the grant and verify the specifics of the grant and their application process. You never want to apply for a grant based on out of date information.
