The Grants to Reduce Domestic Violence, Dating Violence, Sexual Assault, and Stalking on Campus Program popularly known as Campus Program is delineated with the motive to encourage and strengthen higher education institutions to endorse responses in a comprehensive and coordinated manner to reduce the said violence often faced by young girls.

Campuses in alliance with local civil, legal or criminal justice agencies and nonprofit victim advocacy organizations, which are community based, should espouse those policies and protocols that consider any act of violence against women as a grim misdemeanor. They should also establish victim service programs that assure safety of victim, offender’s accountability and the deterrence of such crimes.

No doubt, many campuses have initiated to develop campus-based responses such as campus law enforcement, campus victim services, campus administration, student organizations, housing authorities, health services and disciplinary boards to address violent crimes against women but the need is to address the latent causes of violence against women by establishing programs that delve to bring about change in attitudes and beliefs that allow and encourage such unaccepted behavior.

Colleges and universities need to exhibit through their protocols, policies and actions that any form of violence against women will not be tolerated and it constitutes crime with serious legal consequences.

Higher education institutions under the Higher Education Amendments of 1998 are eligible to apply for this grant program. The Office on Violence Against Women is responsible for administering this grant and particularly supports those projects which are submitted by Tribal Colleges and Universities, Historically Black Colleges and Universities, Universities and Colleges serving primarily populations of Latino or Hispanic and Universities and Colleges based in the territories of Puerto, Guam, Northern Mariana Islands, Virgin Islands and American Samoa.

The higher education institutions applying this grant should put forward proposal of the activities that should be at least implemented such as creation of a coordinated community response or multidisciplinary response to violence against women on campus involving entire campus and community where it is located. Campuses seeking grant should also forge partnerships with minimum one local nonprofit and nongovernmental victim advocacy organization and one or more civil legal or criminal justice agencies.

There is a need to regularly review the policies, procedures and protocols of member organizations by coordinated campus and community response teams. These institutions should also constitute a mandatory prevention and education program for all incoming students on violence against women in teamwork with campus and community-based victim advocacy organizations.

Campus police should be trained to effectively deal with the above said cases and along with it programs to train members of disciplinary boards on campus should also be strengthened to effectively deal with the charges of violence against women. Overall, all those programs, policies and strategies should be adopted and implemented that can efficaciously handle violence against women on campus.

How to Receive a Nursing Scholarship

First Things First: What is FAFSA?

The first step in receiving any sort of scholarship or financial aid for college is to complete the FAFSA. FAFSA, or free application for student aid, is a form that is filled out by every student wishing to be considered for college tuition. This is a federal form, and you only have to complete it once, unlike the past when you had to complete separate paperwork for each college you hoped to attend.

The FAFSA form will provide you with information that will determine the amount of money your family is expected to provide for your education. The difference between what your family is expected to pay and the amount of tuition at your chosen college can be covered by federally backed grants and loans. To reduce the amount that you are expected to pay further, you can apply for a variety of scholarships.

Academic Based or Need Based Scholarships

While there are a variety of scholarships available, they generally fall into two categories, academic based and need based. Academic based scholarships are determined on grades and test scores. Financial need is not a consideration. Competition for these awards is typically stiff, with many very strong candidates vying for the same scholarship. You may be required to submit an essay, or chronicle any previous volunteer work.

Need based scholarships are determined on the financial need of applicants. While grades are typically considered, the academic pressure is usually not as intense as with an academic based scholarship. Many scholarships are a combination of the two: needs based scholarships that require a high GPA, a concentration in certain subjects, community involvement, or specific career goals.

The Nursing Shortage

There is currently a nursing shortage, and the future outlook is that a shortage will remain through the immediate future. As our population lives longer and medical technology continues to grow, the need for nurses outstrips the rate in which they are completing school. This nursing shortage means that an industrious student is likely to earn enough scholarship money to pay his or her way through college and graduate debt free.

One program many hospitals have implemented is paying tuition for current nursing students. Of course, this does come with strings attached. Once the student graduates from nursing school, he or she is expected to work for the hospital for a prearranged period of time. If the nurse leaves before that time, he or she is responsible for paying back part or all of the tuition. This can be an excellent way for students who would otherwise not be able to afford college to earn a degree. Not only does the student graduate debt free, but they automatically have a job once they leave school. The years after nursing school can be spent gaining experience in a variety of hospital settings, and if they decide to move on once their obligation is fulfilled, they have a good idea of what field of nursing they are most interested in.

Financial Help for Graduate Degrees

The lack of nurses with graduate degrees indicates that it is possible for you to earn a Nurse Practitioner, Nurse Midwife, or Nurse Anesthetist degree without the burden of taking on a significant debt. Previously, it was often difficult to weigh the benefits of returning to graduate school against the problem of expensive graduate school credit hours. With many hospitals and clinics lowering costs by employing Nurse Practitioners in place of physicians, and Nurse Anesthetists to assist the Anesthesiologist, it is very likely that the medical group that you currently work for offers tuition reimbursement. If they do not, you should speak to your supervisor or human resources personnel. They may be willing to offer tuition reimbursement on a case by case basis. If your current employer does not offer tuition reimbursement, you may want to consider moving to a different employer. Many employers will offer full tuition reimbursement or even allow you to attend school full time, with the agreement that you will work for them for a specified time once you receive your graduate degree.

Increasing Your Likelihood of Receiving a Scholarship

Whether you are looking for a needs based scholarship for an undergraduate nursing degree, or are searching for a hospital financed scholarship offer to complete your graduate degree, there are several things that you can do to improve your chances of success.

Work in your field. It does not matter if it is paid employment or volunteer work, but working in the field you plan to earn a degree in shows the decision makers that you understand the work and are less likely to switch majors or drop out.

Watch your grades and your money. No matter if you are looking for a need based or academic based scholarship, keep your grades high, even in classes that you do not think matter, and watch your money. When you receive your scholarship money be sure to buy the books and study materials that you will need to succeed. If possible, hold some money back so that you can afford a tutor before exams if you find yourself struggling.

It applies to students who want to study abroad, while they are still enrolled in a college or university in the United States, but also to students who want to enroll in an approved international school.

Scholarships and grants are also available to students who want to study abroad or here in the United States. However, those are often not enough to cover the amount of money a student will need. The purpose of international student loans is to try and bridge the gap and make sure that a student who wishes to study elsewhere will have the finances and the means to do so. In past years, studying abroad has been difficult because of the high cost, but with the desire of students to study abroad getting higher every year, there are more and more international student loans becoming available every year in counterpoint.

No. Loans aren’t income since you have to pay them back – you don’t show them at all. Grants and scholarships are only income if they are spent on something other than eligible expenses – tuition and fees are eligible, room and board are not.

National Merit Scholarship?

I’m going to be a sophomore in the fall.. and in October I will take the PSAT.

I know that it’s out of 240.. but what are the chances of qualifying for the scholarship? What is the minimum score you would need to get on the test to be qualified? Does your GPA factor into the result? Are my results going to be matched up to my school or my district or my county?

My school is kind of different.. everybody takes the PSAT in sophomore year. I don’t even know if we take it again in junior year… by then everybody is too busy studying for the SAT anyway. So I really think this year’s results really count.
How can I find out my state cutoff?
I live in California.. so maybe it’s lower?

Also: sophomore results from the PSAT don’t count toward the National Merit Qualifying Test?

First, you can ONLY qualify for National Merit your junior year. The PSAT was actually made for juniors, but a lot of school districts have started having the sophomores take it for extra practice—without actually explaining to them that its function as the NMSQT only applies to juniors! (My school did this!)
Second, the PSAT only qualifies you as a Semifinalist. After that, you have to fill out a packet of paperwork to qualify for “Finalist” standing—the information you give includes GPA, high school transcript, one recommendation, and a student-written essay; you also have to submit scores from the real SAT. BUT, 95% of Semifinalists become Finalists—those who don’t are usually (I think) only those who fill out the paperwork wrong (or perhaps if you absolutely bombed the SAT, or a few other things)! From Finalist standing, it becomes a bit iffy: only about 8200 of the (about) 15000 Finalist become “National Merit Scholars”. To go from Finalist standing to being a Scholar, they do look at GPA, what you took in high school, your recommendations, your essay, and so on– but I think one of the most important parts is your SAT score. NMSC’s website: http://www.nationalmerit.org/nmsp.php .
That site will tell you your chances: “Of the 1.4 million entrants, some 50,000 with the highest PSAT/NMSQT® Selection Index scores (critical reading + mathematics + writing skills scores) qualify for recognition in the National Merit® Scholarship Program.” THEN “In early September, about 16,000 students, or approximately one-third of the 50,000 high scorers, are notified that they have qualified as Semifinalists.”
Third: the cutoffs for “Semifinalist” change from year to year, and are different in each state (because it’s the highest X% [I don’t remember—.5%?] in each state). “Semifinalist” designation (from PSAT score cutoffs) are determined on a state-to-state basis. I’m pretty sure after that it’s a national thing, so all the Finalists are in the same pool (I can’t remember, and I can’t tell—it’s a pain in the rear to find any definitive, USEFUL information on NMSCs website, and I have tried!).
