Granted I pass the NCLEX, will the Texas Board of Nursing give me a license if I have a theft misdemeanor?

I am still in the process of applying to nursing programs later this fall. Do I indicate in my applications to the program if I had this record? It was over 12 years ago and I was 17 years old (trialed as an adult) caught shoplifting at a department store. The total stolen in clothing was worth $100. The court gave me probation, community service and a fine. Will this on my record keep me from getting my license? Is it best to expunge this record? Is it not worth expunging? Will this even be on my record as some of my previous employers did not see this on my record? If I be honest in all paperwork, will they look past it or completely pass up all my paperwork during application and how would the board of nursing look at this when granting me a license? If this makes any difference, I am a wife and mother of 4 kids trying to make a better life for my family. A lot more mature than 17 years old. I’ve worked jobs in hopsitals and nursing facilities. Please advise.

You need to go to the Texas Board of Nurse Examiners website right now and fill out an application for a PETITION FOR DECLARATORY ORDER. You can get this at:

You will also need a set of fingerprints on the fingerprint cards that you get at the same website. Be prepaired to lay out some cash at this point. It will be worth it.

You will need to fill out the packet and follow the instructions that come with it. They (the board) will then decide if you can get a liscense. Please do this before you spend a lot of money and time on classes. You will go throught an extensive
FBI background check before you can get a liscense

This porcess can easily take several months, so start ASAP.

Now, the good news.

If it is only one incident and it was 12 years ago and a misdemeanor, the chances of you having any trouble are actually very slim.

Now if it was drugs, a sex crime, an abuse case, assult or a felony then you would be in a very different boat.

I’ll bet that nearly 20% of my class had to do this. And the school will do their best to keep it quite.

Oh, my school also ran a check on our fingerprints themselves before they allowed us in the program

Trust me, you will be one of several in your class in the same boat. But if you try to hide it and not be up front, then you are royally screwed.

Just jump throught the hoops and do not worry about it. You should be fine.

While the federal government does not provide grants for starting or growing small businesses, it does provide a myriad of services to assist entrepreneurs in pursuit of their dreams. One of the mechanisms in place to promote small business growth and economic development is the CDFI Fund managed by the US Department of the Treasury. CDFIs fall into three categories:

The genesis of the CDFI Fund was the Riegle Community Development and Regulatory Improvement Act of 1994. The reason for the fund’s existence is to foster economic revitalization and community development.

All participants in the CDFI program go through a certification process conducted by the Treasury Department. The certification enables CDFIs access to a variety of programs offered by the Fund. These programs provide financial and technical assistance to CDFIs through the CDFI Program, the Native American CDFI Assistance Program, the New Markets Tax Credit Program and the Bank Enterprise Award Program.

Small business owners should pay particular attention to the offerings provided by the CD Banks, CD Loan Funds and CD Venture Capital Funds.

CD Banks offer a wide variety of financial and consulting services to individuals and businesses living and operating in underserved or economically disadvantaged areas.

CD Loan Funds are set to to offer development and financing services to businesses, organizations and individuals in low-income rural and urban areas. They serve a variety of organization types including microenterprises, small businesses, and housing and community services organizations.

CD Venture Capital Funds are an excellent source of equity or near-equity financing for small businesses in underserved neighborhoods. Many of these funds provide business consulting services in conjunction with financial services.

While Community Development Banks are for-profit institutions with significant neighborhood representation on their boards of directors, Community Development Loan Funds are usually nonprofit entities. Community Development Venture Capital Funds can either be for profit or not-for-profit institutions.

CDFIs provide services around the nation to underserved and low-income populations. There are also a subset to these entities that focus on areas of extreme economic distress, including the Mississippi Delta, the Gulf Opportunity Zone, Native Communities, Colonias, and Appalachia.

If your small business operates in a area of that is underserved, has a significant low-income population or in an area of extreme economic distress, you should investigate how a CDFI can assist you in growing your business.
