US States Will Compete for School Reform Aid

This is the VOA Special English Education Report, from http://voaspecialenglish.com
The Obama administration is launching a national competition called Race to the Top. States will compete for more than four billion dollars in grants to support the best plans for improving schools.
President Obama and Education Secretary Arne Duncan announced the details in July. The president said this competition will not be based on politics or ideology or the wishes of a particular interest group. Instead, it will be based on a simple principle: whether a state is ready to do what works.
President Obama wants the United States to regain the world’s highest college graduation rates, especially in math and science. His target date is two thousand twenty. But he says the education system is “falling short” and “countries that out-educate us today will out-compete us tomorrow.”
The United States is one of thirty countries in the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development. The OECD has the Program for International Student essment, or PISA. Every three years PISA measures the performance of fifteen-year-olds.
In two thousand six, the United States had lower scores in mathematics than twenty-three of the other twenty-nine OECD countries. Sixteen countries did better in science.
The Race to the Top competition will look for states and local school systems with effective reforms in four areas. One area is meeting international standards for preparing students for college and jobs. Another is developing better ways to hire, keep and reward effective teachers and school leaders.
A third area is building information systems that not only measure student success, but also inform teachers how to improve.
President Obama supports linking teacher pay to student performance. Teachers unions have resisted that idea. States that want to take part in the Race to the Top cannot have rules that bar performance-based pay for teachers. That requirement could make it difficult for several states to receive money from the fund. Among them are California and New York. Finally, to win grants, states must show they are improving the lowest performing schools.
The Education Department will award the first grants early next year. States will get two chances to win. Also, the department plans to award almost six billion dollars through other federal programs in the coming months to support reform efforts.
And that’s the VOA Special English Education Report.

FEDS GRANT EMINENT DOMAIN AS COLLATERAL TO CHINA FOR U.S. DEBTS ( PART 2 )

Beijing, China — Sources at the United States Embassy in Beijing China have just CONFIRMED to me that the United States of America has tendered to China a written agreement which grants to the People’s Republic of China, an option to exercise Eminent Domain within the USA, as collateral for China’s continued purchase of US Treasury Notes and existing US Currency reserves!
The written agreement was brought to Beijing by Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and was formalized and agreed-to during her recent trip to China.
This means that in the event the US Government defaults on its financial obligations to China, the Communist Government of China would be permitted to physically take — inside the USA — land, buildings, factories, perhaps even entire cities – to satisfy the financial obligations of the US government.

Obama Challenges Schools To “Race To The Top”
August 7, 2009 by Advisor
Arguing that education needs reform AND more money, President Obama is
proposing a program that uses more carrot than stick to improve
lagging US education results.
The program he calls “Race to the top” promises more than $4 Billion
dollars in grants to states and school districts that not only improve
student performance, but also put good teachers where they are needed
most. States that refuse to track teacher performance would not be
eligible for the grant money.
The program is the antithesis of President Bush’s underfunded “No
Child Left Behind” program which penalized schools that did not meet
performance standards and relied only on student testing in
determining which schools were doing well and which were doing poorly.

Kucinich: the Federal Reserve is paying banks NOT to make loans to struggling Americans!

Tuesday, 21 July 2009
U.S. Congressman Dennis Kucinich (D-Ohio, 10th District) questions Neil M. Barofsky, the Special Inspector General for the Troubled et Relief Program (SIGTARP), testifying before the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, about interest payments made to banks that keep their TARP funds and other government (taxpayer) bailout money with the Federal Reserve, instead of making loans to struggling Americans (the original intent of the TARP, remember?) The Fed makes generous interest payments to the banks for “parking” their “excess reserves” at the Fed.
And guess who will end up paying for this “interest” given to the banks, and everything else? That’s right, you and me, John and Jane Q. Suckers!! The dumb, fat sheep!
By the way, Neil M. Barofsky is a good guy here — don’t beat up on him. He’s in immediate danger of losing his job (if not his life) becauses he’s revealing too many of the Temple’s dark secrets. Barofsky deserves our full support.
You can download Special Inspector General for the Troubled et Relief Program (SIGTARP) reports, testimonies and audits at sigtarp.gov. The July 20th, 2009 report, “SIGTARP Survey Demonstrates That Banks Can Provide Meaningful Information On Their Use Of TARP Funds,” is esecially interesting and can be downloaded at

Hamas grants clemency for Fatah fighters

Denied Legitimacy by Vote, Hamas Wins it by Force
“Though Hamas won elections in January 2006, its efforts to govern have been stymied by international sanctions against the Palestinian government and a crippling Israeli siege. Fatah, instead of responding to its electoral loss by bringing in new leadership and weaning itself away from corruption, has spent its time conspiring to overthrow Hamas.
Denied the legitimate victory it won in the elections, Hamas was not allowed to govern. Now it has won a military victory — with bullets. Yet what led to this was a prolonged Israeli occupation and siege, the international community’s indifference to a starving Palestinian population, and the systematic weakening of the Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas.”
Editor’s Note: According to commentator Jamal Dajani. With Hamas’ recent victory over Fatah in the Gaza Strip, Israel and Washington may now have to do what was once unthinkable: recognize Hamas as a legitimate political party. NAM contributor Jamal Dajani is a producer and the Director of Middle Eastern Programming at Linktv.

Ulysses S. Grant music video (parody of “Back in the USSR”)

Originally just made for a history presentation last year, this was the video I showed after a scripted interview with former president Grant (played by yours truly). Everyone I showed it to liked it, so I decided to post it on the internets for the world to get some “educational” humor. If you can even call it “educational.”
I was very short on time during the week that I filmed and edited this, so obviously it could’ve been a little better, especially lip-synching-wise. Special thanks to Hunter, Reed, Joe, Henry, Paul, and Bryan for helping me film the video, even though the “dramatic” part was too long and complicated to shoot in less than an hour or two. And thank you for putting up with my annoying perfectionism.
