The Last Oracle

The Last Oracle

$5.99

What if you could bioengineer the next great world prophet: scientifically produce the next Buddha, the next Muhammad, or the next Jesus? Would it mark the Second Coming or initiate a chain reaction with disastrous consequences? A master at combining historical and religious intrigue with edge-of-your-seat adventure, New York Times bestselling author James Rollins brings back SIGMA Force to battle a group of rogue scientists who’ve unleashed a bioengineering project that could bring about the extinction of humankind. In Washington, D.C., a homeless man dies in Commander Gray Pierce’s arms, shot by an assassin’s bullet. But the death leaves behind a greater mystery: a bloody coin found clutched in the dead man’s hand, an ancient relic that can be traced back to the Greek Oracle of Delphi. As ruthless hunters search for the stolen artifact, Gray Pierce discovers that the coin is the key to unlocking a plot that dates back to the Cold War and threatens the very foundation of humanity. An international think tank of scientists known as the Jasons has discovered a way to bioengineer autistic children who show savant talents – mathematical geniuses, statistical masterminds, brilliant conceptual artists – into something far greater and far more frightening, in hopes of creating a world prophet for the new millennium, one to be manipulated to create a new era of global peace . . . a peace on their own terms. Halfway around the world, a man wakes up in a hospital bed with no memory of who he is, knowing only that he’s a prisoner in a subterranean research facility. With the help of three unusual children, he makes his escape across a mountainous and radioactive countryside, pursued by savage hunters bred in the same laboratory. But his goal is not escape, nor even survival. In order to thwart a plot to wipe out a quarter of the world’s population, he must sacrifice all, even the children who rescued him. From ancient Greek temples to glittering mausoleums, from the slums of India to the toxic ruins of Russia, two men must race against time to solve a mystery that dates back to the first famous oracle of history – the Greek Oracle of Delphi. But one question remains: Will the past be enough to save the future?

Michigan Family Farms and Farm Buildings (Paperback)

Michigan Family Farms and Farm Buildings (Paperback)

$21.03

Michigan`s family farms form the backbone of the state. One need only see the Centennial Farm signs that dot the sides of the state`s country roads to understand that. Hemalata Dandekar shows in her new book just how connected those family farm buildings are to the families that inhabit them. Eight family-farm case studies display farm buildings` relationship to the land they sit on, their function on the farm, the materials they`re made with, the farm enterprises themselves, and the families who own them. Photographs, plans, elevations, and sections of typical, exemplary traditional farm buildings show the aesthetic and architectural qualities of those types of buildings across the state. The ways in which the buildings serve the productive activities of the farm, shelter and nourish the people and livestock, yield a living, and enable the aspirations of farm people are shown in the words and photographs of the farmers themselves. The buildings form a window into the lives of Michigan`s family farms and into the hearts and minds of the people who have lived and worked in them their entire lives. Hemalata C. Dandekar is head of City and Regional Planning at California Polytechnic State University. She specializes in urbanization, urban-rural linkages, rural development, and gender and housing. She developed her love of Michigan farmers and farm architecture during her years as a student, professor, and then director at the Urban Planning program of the A. Alfred Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning at the University of Michigan.

target grants for schools

If you are looking for an opportunity to play your sport at the college level, small colleges athletic scholarships may be the avenue you have been looking for. While everyone else is only targeting the bigger schools, you can target the smaller schools and really put yourself in a great position to get an athletic scholarship.

Avoid The Competition

Everyone wants to play football at USC, basketball at UNC, or baseball at Cal-State Fullerton, and who can blame them. Schools like these get a lot of press and attention and many of their players go on to play in the pros. However, not everyone has the size and elite level athleticism to play at a major Division I school.

That can spell opportunity for you. While everyone is targeting only the big schools for scholarships, you can target the smaller schools and have far less competition. You could target schools at these levels:

- NCAA Mid-Major Division I

- NCAA Lower Division I (Division IAA in Football)

- NAIA Division I

- NCAA Divison II

- NAIA Division II

- NCAA Division III (no athletic schlarships, but financial aid is available)

- NCCAA (Christian Schools)

- Junior Colleges (Including Community Colleges)

All these division levels could give you an opportunity to play your sport in college. Small colleges athletic scholarships can get all or part of your school paid for while you play your sport, just like the bigger schools can.

Don’t Be An Athletic Snob

I am always amazed at the number of athletes I hear from that have decided it’s Division I or nothing for them. It’s almost as if they would be embarrassed to play at a smaller school. I always tell them that they are making a huge mistake. Not everyone can play at the top levels of competition and if you are not being recruited by anyone by the time you are a junior in high school, your chances of Division I are very slim.

How To Target Smaller Schools

The best way to target these smaller schools is to be in direct contact with the coaches. You need to market and promote yourself and make sure they know about you and your athletic accomplishments. Small colleges athletic scholarships are far less competitive if you do make contact with coaches because many of these smaller schools don’t have the recruiting budgets to send their coaches all around the country looking for prospects. Most of these coaches will be glad to hear from you.

grants group homes

March 1, 2010 by Advisor

The creative tactics that foreclosure scam companies use to steal money and trick innocent homeowners out of their houses would be entertaining if the results were not so tragic. From phony documents and forged quitclaim deeds to pointless mitigation services and companies that change their name every other week, the number of potential scams seems endless.

One group of scammers, though, had put a 19th century spin on this 21st century foreclosure crisis. A San Diego, California based company called Federal Land Grant Company that has been shut down by that state’s attorney general persuaded homeowners to transfer the deed to their house into a vehicle called a “land grant.” This vehicle is absolutely fraudulent and has not been used in over one hundred years.

For some historical background, the Federal land grant system was used during the colonial period to encourage settlers to move into and develop newly acquired property. As America expanded further westward, it ended up with vast swaths of mostly empty, unsettled land and used this system to encourage further expansion. It was also used to facilitate industry and transportation, with four out of the five transcontinental railroads being built with assistance from the land grants.

But this type of instrument has not been used since the 1800s and is no longer recognized by any competent court or county government. However, this company charged $10,000 per house to be transferred into the land grant, had the homeowners sign over the deed to their house, and then had the audacity to charge rent. All for a completely fraudulent scam.

Using documents from hundreds of years ago, the company persuaded homeowners that this phony solution would actually prevent the bank from being able to take the house back through foreclosure. In the end, many of the victims were simply evicted from the house after the court proceedings and sheriff sale. Transferring ownership of the property, whether through legitimate or phony documents, does not transfer the responsibility of paying the mortgage.

This should be a stern warning to homeowners against trusting any company that offers a solution to foreclosure that seems too good to be true. Just because a company offers weekly seminars and uses complicated terms to describe their “unique,” “creative,” “proprietary” process does not mean that the company has anyone’s interests at heart besides its own.

At the very least, before considering transferring ownership of a property to stop foreclosure, homeowners should consult with their own legal counsel. Deed transfers, land trusts, land grants, quitclaim deeds, or whatever term the scammers use should all be reviewed by someone competent to read and understand the contracts and the ramifications of entering into such agreements.

This Federal Land Grant Company had tricked over 300 homeowners into transferring their properties into the phony system. This means that 300 properties have now been transferred out of the hands of the original owners who are still facing foreclosure on these houses. If any of them had consulted with an attorney or knowledgeable real estate professional before entering into the agreement, they could have avoided this situation.

Now, for the majority of these homeowners, matters are much worse. They do not currently own the house but have to find some way to avoid losing it to foreclosure. Without a clear title, refinancing, selling, or even offering a deed in lieu will be much more difficult. And although this particular scam will be forced to shut down and may have to to provide refunds to their clients, they will have been responsible for the loss of a significant number of homes.

Staying away from foreclosure scam operators is not easy when faced with the loss of a home. Desperation to save the house and ignorance of how the foreclosure process works contribute to homeowners being more susceptible to these scams than they would be otherwise. If ownership of a house is to be transferred, though, homeowners should consult with a competent legal adviser and clearly understand what will happen to the mortgage if they no longer own their home.

The ForeclosureFish website has been created to provide homeowners in danger of losing their properties with relevant and timely foreclosure help and news. The site examines numerous solutions that may be used to save a home, such as bankruptcy to stop foreclosure, deed in lieu, cash for keys, foreclosure loans, and more. Visit the site to read more articles about how foreclosure works and how the process may be avoided before it is too late: http://www.foreclosurefish.com

college scholarship names

The cost of a college education has risen to unthinkable levels over the last two decades. Few parents have the extra cash on hand to cover these costs, so student loans and mounting debt have become a reality for many students. Image graduating with an outstanding debt of 50 to 100 thousand dollars. It almost defeats the purpose of getting that degree in the first place. With no end to tuition increases in sight, financial aid packages are essential for most students.

Fortunately, aid opportunities have also multiplied in recent years. Scholarships and grants were once thought of as only available for the poor or the brightest students. That is no longer true. These days, almost everyone is eligible for some type of award.

Free money for college can be divided into two basic categories: scholarships (usually merit based) and grants (usually need based). Of course, many other conditions apply to various awards. Minority status, gender, career plans, and field of study are the most common qualifiers for todayÂ’s financial aid awards. Almost everyone can use one of these categories to focus their search for aid.

One of the best sources for college grants is the federal government. Be sure to submit The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) as soon as possible. This will tell you if you are eligible for a Pell grant, and colleges will use this information to determine if you qualify for a school-sponsored grant. Private grant foundations may also require the FAFSA be completed before considering you for an award.

Ideally, a student would start looking for scholarships during the junior year of high school. This may seem early, but some awards require an application be submitted the year before you begin your first semester in college. Furthermore, collecting the names and contact information of prospective awards can take months. You must also factor in time for completing lengthy application forms, writing essays, and scheduling interviews.

In your search for scholarships, focus on three main sources. First, search your local community. Start with the high school councilorÂ’s office, your local library, churches, community organizations, and any corporation that is based nearby. Next, contact the financial aid office of each college you are considering. They can tell you about all school-based awards that may not appear in the standard listings. Finally, use the Internet. The standard search engine is of some use, but dedicated scholarship search sites are a tremendous resource. Some of these data banks have up to 800,000 awards indexed. Best of all, you can search based on a personal profile that will match scholarships to your unique situation.

Of course, this article can only get you started in the right direction. College funding is a complicated process and it is easy to feel overwhelmed. Remember that almost half of all college students receive some type of aid, so the chances of success are good. With a dedicated and organized search plan, you can get your share too.

Remember high school gym class? You played volleyball, ran a mile on the track, and ducked before being hit in the face during a vigorous game of dodge ball? Physical education has been part of the educational scene for nearly 200 years. It is vital that students participate in physical education to keep their mind and body in peak learning condition. Currently, the childhood obesity rate is dangerously climbing to epidemic levels. Therefore, the focus on physical education is more important then ever before.

The question is how should physical education be conducted? First, take a look at physical education history. Physical education has evolved over the years. Physical education is defined as “instruction in the development and care of the body ranging from simple calisthenics exercises to a course of study providing training in hygiene, gymnastics, and the performance and management of athletic games (Merriam-Webster Dictionary).” This definition is broad because you can learn several topics ranging from the rules of basketball to sex education. It depends on the school policies of your state educational system.

Physical education was officially recognized in the United States in the early 1800Â’s. Colleges and Universities began to offer physical education programs throughout the 1800Â’s. Finally, in 1866 California was the first to mandate physical education. Many states followed this mandate within the next 30 years. The importance of training the body as well as the mind became prevalent in the educational system.

The 20th century brought varying levels of physical education to each state. Presidents such as Eisenhower and Kennedy promoted physical education and fitness. Children took the Presidential Fitness test each year to assess their physical fitness level. This arose from the need for U.S. students to be as physical fit as their European counterparts.

Controversial issues have played an integral role in physical education history. For example, in 1972 Title IX banned sexual discrimination in schools regarding sports and academics. This allowed female athletes to actively participate in team sports other than cheerleading with the financial and emotional support of the school system.

Another controversial issue is sexual education. It has been the subject of intense debate for many decades. Each state has specific guidelines about what will be taught and whether students can opt out of the sexual education program. Some states allow students to watch a video of a child being born while other states only discuss abstinence.

The official employment of physical education programs has a 200 year history which has become home to controversial issues, social reform, and overall child well being. Physical education will continue to evolve as the needs of the student population changes, societal attitudes fluctuate, and the flow of educational funds towards physical education is maintained.

grants for college clubs

There are many scholarships just waiting for the right students to apply and here we will look at a few tips on getting a scholarship. In order to get a scholarship, however, you will want to be sure that you do all the work that is necessary to insure that you are selected as a candidate. Check with the colleges that you are considering applying to and be sure that you are applying for their scholarships at the same time. Most scholarship deadlines are between December and February and some may be in May.

The first tip on getting a scholarship is to be sure to start early. Students should begin applying for scholarships their junior and senior years. It is never too early to begin applying for scholarships, some may require that you are a certain age, grade, etc. Be sure that you follow the rules and guidelines on the application.

The second tip is to apply to as many scholarships that you can. This involves prospecting your colleges and seeing what they have available. Texas, for example, gives a certain amount of money to students that are in the top percentages of their class.

The third tip to getting a scholarship is to develop connections and references when applying. Many applications will ask for references from previous teachers and instructors. Some applications may also ask for specific types of teachers, for example, if you are applying for an art scholarship, they may ask for your art teacherÂ’s contact information. You will want to be able to supply schools and scholarship programs with references that are very aware of who you are and what you are interested in. Ask your teachers if you can use them as a reference prior to putting their name on your application. Scholarship applications may also ask you for letters of reference. Ask only the teachers that you have a good relationship with to write these letters for you as they will need to know what you are interested in so that they can write an effective letter for you.

The fourth tip is to participate on campus. Colleges like to give scholarships to students that have participated in clubs and associations. It does not matter how many clubs you have been a member of, but it does matter if you participated in them actively. If you have been an officer of any clubs, that is even better. The same will go when you are in college. Recruiters from companies and employers like to see that you were active and involved on campus.

The fifth tip is to work with organizations in your community and volunteer your time. Volunteer work and customer service are great ways to show that you care about your community and that you are willing to go above and beyond the call of duty. It is also important to show that will work without pay in order to help others. Colleges like to admit students who will care about their campus and will be actively involved in the campus without compensation. Volunteer work also helps to build personal confidence and good character.

Following these tips might not guarantee you the scholarships you will apply for but they wonÂ’t work against you. The more active you are in the community and your campus the better chance you have of showing what kind of person you are. You will also be able to show that you are a person of good character and that is what really matters.
