One of the best sources for college grants is the federal government. Be sure to submit The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) as soon as possible. This will tell you if you are eligible for a Pell grant, and colleges will use this information to determine if you qualify for a school-sponsored grant. Private grant foundations may also require the FAFSA be completed before considering you for an award.

Ideally, a student would start looking for scholarships during the junior year of high school. This may seem early, but some awards require an application be submitted the year before you begin your first semester in college. Furthermore, collecting the names and contact information of prospective awards can take months. You must also factor in time for completing lengthy application forms, writing essays, and scheduling interviews.

In your search for scholarships, focus on three main sources. First, search your local community. Start with the high school councilorÂ’s office, your local library, churches, community organizations, and any corporation that is based nearby. Next, contact the financial aid office of each college you are considering. They can tell you about all school-based awards that may not appear in the standard listings. Finally, use the Internet. The standard search engine is of some use, but dedicated scholarship search sites are a tremendous resource. Some of these data banks have up to 800,000 awards indexed. Best of all, you can search based on a personal profile that will match scholarships to your unique situation.

Of course, this article can only get you started in the right direction. College funding is a complicated process and it is easy to feel overwhelmed. The question is how should physical education be conducted? First, take a look at physical education history. Physical education has evolved over the years. The importance of training the body as well as the mind became prevalent in the educational system.

The 20th century brought varying levels of physical education to each state. Presidents such as Eisenhower and Kennedy promoted physical education and fitness. Children took the Presidential Fitness test each year to assess their physical fitness level. This arose from the need for U.S. students to be as physical fit as their European counterparts.

Controversial issues have played an integral role in physical education history. For example, in 1972 Title IX banned sexual discrimination in schools regarding sports and academics. This allowed female athletes to actively participate in team sports other than cheerleading with the financial and emotional support of the school system.

Another controversial issue is sexual education. It has been the subject of intense debate for many decades. Each state has specific guidelines about what will be taught and whether students can opt out of the sexual education program. Some states allow students to watch a video of a child being born while other states only discuss abstinence.

The official employment of physical education programs has a 200 year history which has become home to controversial issues, social reform, and overall child well being. Physical education will continue to evolve as the needs of the student population changes, societal attitudes fluctuate, and the flow of educational funds towards physical education is maintained.

Third, visit Froogle.com. Froogle is an offshoot of Google. It is a giant shopping site where you can find lots of different models. Search for ‘gokart’ and ‘gokarts’ just as you did at Google and Yahoo, making sure to write down the cheap discount prices you find for the go kart models you are most interested in.

Fourth, go to ebay and do another similar search. Look at the different auctions and notice the prices that go karts are actually selling for. This is one of the best ways to determine a selling price. You may have to keep track of a few auctions for a few days, but it will give you a good idea of the value for different types of go karts.

Do you get the idea? All youÂ’re doing is spending a little time locating all of the best prices you can find online. Then youÂ’re keeping track of these prices so that you can compare them. The issue of homework is one that can divide educators and parents. Before assigning homework, an educator must carefully consider the efficacy of the assignment, the abilities of the students, and the reason for assigning it. The considerations in this article are from both a parental and primary educator’s viewpoint, and there are certainly valid reasons both for and against homework.

According to Wikipedia, homework “refers to tasks assigned to students by their teachers to be completed mostly outside of school.” Within this one statement there are some valid questions that arise.

1. Does homework need to be able to be completed independently by students or should it be with parental assistance?

While parental assistance is always welcome, in reality many of our students live in households where parental help is not always readily available. As well, family time is becoming so disjointed that it seems that sacred time ought to be better spent interacting with each other as a family unit rather than struggling over homework.

This is not to say that parents should never help their child. It is saying that educators must be cognizant of teaching their lessons so thoroughly that parental help becomes mostly unnecessary. Some teachers go as far as requiring parental help with homework, and that does not breed positive feelings towards the school. Instead, it makes parents feel that the teacher is not doing his or her job and is expecting the parents to pick up the pieces. This leads to the next question…

2. What is the purpose of homework?

The purpose of homework, I believe, is practice. It is not supposed to be designed to teach something new. Rather it is to practice skills that have been previously taught in the classroom. The idea of homework, in and of itself, breeds negative feelings for many students and parents. They come home from school tired and are often frustrated by the school day. Many children are involved in other activities that are equally important to their social and emotional well-being, and too much homework (homework without a real purpose) can take away from those other activities.

Another purpose of homework that is often cited is to begin to build responsibility. However, is it truly our role, as educators, to have to do that through homework? Are there not other ways we can build this trait in our students? Having said this, I do believe a small amount (10-15 minutes) of meaningful practice some evenings is a good thing, but homework should require students to be active meaning makers, and if the work doesn’t lend itself to that, don’t give it.

3. Isn’t homework critical for grades?

No. Homework can be used within grades as a full mark for attempting it, but actual grades should come from the student’s performance in the classroom. I know I would not want to be graded every time I practiced something, and research shows it can take up to 28 exposures to a new concept for students to solidify the material. I do “mark” homework, but “grades” come from both subjective and objective observations and formal assessments within the classroom. Perhaps homework ought to be shared more in class, and not graded by the teacher with little to no discussion amongst the students.

4. If we are raising standards, doesn’t that mean students will have to work harder?

Yes, but so should educators. This does not equate more homework – it equates innovative ways of delivering content, understanding how children learn best, holding students accountable for their progress at school, and being sure we teach in meaningful ways that allow students to make connections and scaffold on previously held knowledge. By no means does this equate forcing students to do more work at home. In contrast, their day should be so filled with meaningful learning experiences that their time at home is best left for individual pursuits and family-oriented activities.

Preconceived notions of what homework is, should be, and the purpose of it will always be a difficult topic. Educators can do much with changing attitudes if we deeply consider how we utilize homework, the effects it has on our students and their families, and if homework lends itself to deeper understanding of a subject.

There is no exact definition of the Middle East that is agreed upon by all people. Some core countries are always included as part of the region, but there is disagreement about how far the region extends, and this is complicated by cultural, linguistic, and political considerations.

The nations always included as being part of the region are Syria, Lebanon, Jordan, Israel/Palestine, Iraq, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Yemen, Oman, Qatar, Bahrain, and Iran. So it can be said that the Middle East is approximately equivalent to Western Asia.

But some countries outside of Western Asia, or that straddle Western Asia and another continent/region, are often included in regional classifications. Egypt is one of the most commonly included. Most of Egypt’s landmass is located in North Africa, but the Sinai Peninsula is in Western Asia, and geographically inseparable from Israel’s Negev desert. Not only that, but Egypt is the cultural capital of the Arab world and has therefore had a large influence on the Arab cultures of Western Asia.

Also sometimes included is Turkey, which borders Syria, Iraq, and Iran. It has a Kurdish region that extends beyond the country’s Eastern borders. And there is a minority of people speaking Turkic languages living in Iran. There is also an Arabic-speaking minority in southern Turkey. So Turkey has a lot of cultural connections to the Middle East. And 97% of the land mass of Turkey lies within Western Asia. However, most Turks themselves are likely to deny their connections to Asia. The people of Turkey tend to think of themselves as part of Europe, even though only 3% of the country lies in Europe. This is possibly because the main part of Istanbul, Turkey’s largest city, is located in Europe (though the city straddles the two continents). And similar to the cultural overlap with the Middle East in southern and southeastern Turkey, there is much cultural overlap with Europe in western Turkey, as well as crossover with former Soviet republics in northeastern Turkey. These days Turkey tends to be left out of classifications more often than it used to be.

Some people include the Arab countries of North Africa in their definitions of the region, because of the linguistic and cultural connections between the Arab countries of Africa and Asia. Libya, Tunisia, Algeria, and Morrocco are the most commonly cited. More rarely included are Sudan, Somalia, Western Sahara, and Mauritania.

Sometimes included as part of the region but normally considered part of Central Asia, is Afganistan. Pakistan is also sometimes included , probably because many people confuse the Islamic World with the Arab World. Occasionally included are the former Soviet republics of Central Asia, such as Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Azerbaijan, Tajikistan, and Kyrgyzstan. There are linguistic connections between these Central Asian countries and the countries of Western Asia, with Turkic languages (related to Turkish language spoken in Turkey) and Iranian languages (related to the Persian language spoken in Iran). Most, however, believe that this definition of the Middle East is a great stretch, and that these countries are outside of its boundaries.

The basic classification of the Middle East comes down to Western Asia, with other peripheral countries sometimes included because of religious, cultural, or political ties with Western Asian countries.
